The U.S. Naval Safety Center (NSC)

In support of its mission, the NSC developed its Web-enabled Safety System (WSS), designed to track and report on mishaps and hazards occurring anywhere within the Department of the Navy. By accumulating and aggregating these data, the NSC expects to create baselines for future trend tracking, which will enable organizational units across the Department to measure—and continually improve—the effectiveness of safety programs.

Challenge

The solution collects, stores, reports on, and enables analysis of accident, incident, and other safety-related event.

Solution

The team transitioned to Jaspersoft’s open source JasperServer business intelligence solution about three years ago. JasperServer was easy to integrate with the DoD’s authentication scheme, and its built-in role-based security uses the DoD-mandated authentication data to control end user access to individual reports and data.

Results

The overall solution now provides comprehensive capture and tracking of all parachuting and diving mishaps, and the resulting baseline data are now used as an important measure of organizationa.
