The world is made of data. Our human senses process many gigabytes of information every day, every moment of our lives. Much of this information is essential for our survival. Even so, the vast majority is lost shortly after it was collected. About 5000 years ago, someone decided that it was a good idea to start recording important information and presenting it in a form that made it easy to make sense of and profit from that data. Thus the report was born!

A recent survey showed that many of the largest corporations still get 88% of the data they rely upon from reporting.

So very far from being dead, even in an age of Big Data, Data Science, and Machine Learning, reporting still has a big role to play. In this book we’ll present a high level overview of where reporting has been, where it is now, and sneak a peek at where it may be going in the future.
