Key development pillars

Our core functionality is built on our open-source DNA, and our drivers for innovation will expand and improve our existing solutions in the following key areas: 

Pixel-perfect reporting

Teams should look for our JasperReports^® Web Studio design features in our upcoming 3.0.1 release to improve as we add a snap-to grid along with advanced export and printing options. Developers will be able to create reports that fuel effective decision-making and render exactly the way they are designed, down to the pixel. 

Core engine 

We’re adding support for Jakarta Enterprise Edition (EE), dynamic input controls, and more robust security features to our already powerful core engine functionality. With better ad hoc reporting, end users are enabled to create stunning data visualizations and insightful reports, all on their own with no application download required. 

User experience (UX) and developer experience (DX) 

Our developers are improving the DX and UX with Jaspersoft Visualize Components. Based on modern Material UI, this open-source toolkit will allow developers to easily render ADA-compliant, immersive, embeddable UI components like input controls and the scheduler inside their web applications. The goal is to create a library of many such UI components that will foster a better experience for developers and end users.

Cloud and platform support 

Jaspersoft offers a wide range of flexible deployment options from source code to WAR file installers to Docker-ready deployments. Jaspersoft is continuously adding more platform support and most recently included support for Amazon Linux 2023 on our AWS Marketplace. Developers will have more flexibility than ever so they can deploy their reporting into any environment. 

Roadmap and future developments

Our continuous release model means developers always have access to our latest updates and improvements. We regularly perform maintenance to our supported release versions to address any bugs that might arise and quickly resolve security concerns. Our upcoming innovations focus on quality, security, and better database connectivity. New releases ahead will include: 

More functionality in JasperReports Web Studio

This web-based tool is available to our commercial edition customers who want a zero desktop footprint. We are continuing to port more features from the desktop Jaspersoft Studio to make these tools cross-compatible while continuing our focus on usability and embeddability. This includes elements such as snap-to geometry to easily align multiple elements so they can be moved as one unit.

Jakarta EE support

With Version 9.5 releasing in early 2025, we’re providing comprehensive support for Jakarta EE, the successor to Java EE, so developers will have compatibility with modern Java applications and frameworks. Please see our upgrade guidance below. 

Advanced export and printing

Future releases will include more export and printing options in the report server and report viewer so you can deliver any report you need. This will give end users more control over how reports are generated and provide additional options for layout, content, filtering, and security.  We’ll also add features such as direct printing from the report viewer and advanced export settings so users no longer have to save reports to the repository. 

Our team is also working on improving the performance of report books by enabling parallel query execution for sub-reports. This feature will improve performance and reduce the time it takes to generate complex report books.

Cloud and platform support

As always, Jaspersoft is committed to supporting a wide range of cloud and platform environments to provide maximum flexibility for developers and end users. We’ll continue providing Docker samples and resources for deploying Jaspersoft on platforms such as Amazon Web Service (AWS), Azure, Google Cloud Platform (GCP), and more.

Enhanced user experience

We’re developing a new UI toolkit, Jaspersoft Visualize Components, to give developers a more modern and interactive user experience for embedded analytics scenarios with more visualization capabilities and endless embedding options. 

Our engineers are actively working on improving accessibility features that comply with Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) standards, such as making viewers and designers readily available to users with disabilities. 

Upgrading for optimal support

At Jaspersoft, we deliver continuous releases that are always backward compatible. Long-term support versions 8.0 and 9.0 will provide hotfixes for enhancement requests and new features to customers sooner without requiring a full upgrade to a new version. 

For customers still on JasperReports 8.0, we recommend upgrading to either 9.0 or 9.5 based on specific organizational needs and dependencies.

Upgrading to 9.0 is a good option for developers who primarily use Java specifications and are looking for a long-term stable release with continued support.

Upgrading to 9.5 is a better option for customers who want to adopt Jakarta EE in the future since this will be the long-term stable release version for Jakarta specifications.

For either version, customers should plan to upgrade by the middle of next year for continued support and access to the latest features.
